What is PAP compliance?
CPAP or BiPAP® is commonly called “PAP.” It is a Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) system that is used to treat sleep apnea. Most insurance companies have certain parameters for using PAP equipment.
The specific requirements will differ depending on your insurance policy.
Why is compliance important?
Compliance is important because you must meet certain requirements in order for your insurance company to approve paying for the equipment beyond the compliance trial (depending on the insurance). If you don’t meet those requirements of your insurance company, they will not continue to pay for the equipment or supplies.
Most insurances convert the device to “patient owned” after 13 months.
What are the requirements of compliance?
Most insurance companies have a two-part requirement for compliance PAP therapy.
1. You must use the device for no less than 4 hours per night (good usage will only count if there is a good mask seal) for 21 days over the span of 30 consecutive days during the initial 90 day compliance period.
2. You must see your physician (or other approved provider) no sooner than your 31st day of beginning therapy and no later than day 90.
